FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — History is being made at the 2025 Ryder Cup. Unfortunately, for those stateside, the United States is on the wrong end of it. Europe has grabbed a massive 8.5 to 3.5 lead at Bethpage Black, becoming the first road team to win the first three sessions of a Ryder Cup since the Americans and Europeans began going head-to-head in 1979. The last time such dominance occurred in any form of Ryder Cup was 1961, when the U.S. only battled Great Britain.
While the 5-point deficit is technically not insurmountable for the Americans — Sunday singles, in particular, is where the hosts can heavily add to its scoring totals — the United States will need to claim at least 11 of the remaining 16 points (69%) to hoist the trophy on Long Island. In other words, the U.S. would need to be exactly dominant over the remaining 16 matches as Europe has been across the first 12.
U.S. captain Keegan Bradley confounded supporters by running back out foursomes pairings Saturday morning that struggled to even compete 24 hours earlier. The Americans were better overall but still lost the third session 3-1 with Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Young earning the lone point in the opening match. Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler battled until the 18th hole against Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland but ultimately fell again with Scheffler, the No. player in the world, moving to 0-3-0 in this Ryder Cup.
The festivities continue Saturday afternoon with fourballs, a best-ball competition that has seen Bradley switch up his pairings more substantially than he did with foursomes in the morning. Scheffler and DeChambeau being paired together creates the potential for both to feed off one another as they did two years ago in Rome.
